And often it is poor from the standpoint of performing intricate grooming such as makeup application.

Vanity lighting functions best when it is at face level and preferably on both sides of the mirror to prevent shadowing.

Whenever possible you should avoid bar light mounted above mirror, and use side lights at face level.

Every zone in a bath has it's own requirements.

Moderate to larger baths may have a number of areas that require their own lighting specific to their function.

General purpose or recessed lighting is appropriate in both small and larger bath areas for short in and out trips such as brushing teeth, taking medication, and those late at night visits. This bathroom lighting need not be focused, but must provide adequate light to read instructions on medicine bottles and perform general tasks.

Plan recessed lighting away from the vanity area.

Subdued lighting or that which can be adjusted in intensity is a great addition to a tub/shower location. Designing a spa-like environment for use of a whirlpool or soaking tub will increase the pleasure you get from your bath.

Check building codes for your locale so you install properly and observe necessary safety regulations.

Think about your bath, it's zones and lighting requirements, and review your choice of decor and finishes. Shop around, see the lighting that is available within your budget that fufills these choices. There are attractive bathroom lighting choices on the market, and one that will provide just what you are looking for.
