Garage Doors – Tips To Maintain Them

Most homeowners will want their garage doors to keep working properly for a long time to come.  To ensure that it keeps working over time, you will need to maintain your garage doors correctly.  When it comes to maintaining garage doors, there are quite a few things that you’ll need to know.  If you live in a windy or rainy area, it becomes even more important to maintain your door properly.  You will find that excessive rain and wind can wreak havoc on your door.

At the very least, you will want to lubricate all moving parts of your garage door.  If they aren’t lubricated well, they won’t be able to function properly.  You should lubricate the hinges and rollers at least once a year with lightweight oil.  The job will be much easier if you use a can of WD-40.

You should be aware that the garage door’s spring are very important.  If the springs aren’t working properly, then you’ll have a hard time with your garage door.  You may find that the springs are too loose or too tight.  If the springs are messed up, you will have a very difficult time opening or closing your door.

It is best not to mess around with the springs yourself though.  They are under a lot of tension and you can easily hurt yourself if you don’t know what you’re doing.  You should call a professional to your home if something goes wrong with your springs.  Just make sure that they’re lubricated.

Another important part of maintaining garage doors is cleaning them every couple of months.  If you allow debris to accumulate on the door, it can lead to corrosion.  Use mild detergent and a soft brush to keep your garage door clean.

You will want to pay attention to the tracks too.  The door may stop working properly if debris gets inside the tracks.  Just clean the tracks out periodically.

Your garage door may also have a weather seal.  During the summer months, you likely won’t pay much attention to this.  Before the winter arrives however, it’s best that you check on the weather seal’s condition.  If you see that it is damaged, you should get it repaired.

If you have a wooden garage door, it’s important to note that you’ll be required to perform extra maintenance to keep it in good condition.  Moisture can cause the wood to warp or rot if you don’t care for the door properly.
