Bathroom Remodeling Guide
First, Figure out the Purpose for your Remodel
Are you planning to sell your home and get more back than what you originally put into your remodel? Are you not happy with the size or layout of your bathroom? Do you want to make an upgrade from a visual standpoint?
Answering these questions will provide you with a good idea on how you would like your bathroom look.
Next, You Want to Get an Estimate on how much the materials you need would cost.
Try to pick out everything that you need in advance. You may need some advice from your Plumber, electrician and/or contractor for details, but here are some of the basic things that you would need.
Electrical Supplies – Outlet Boxes, switches and wiring.
Plumbing Supplies – Pipe fittings (elbows, couplings, and T-fittings), solvent cement (for attaching PVC pipes together), copper pipe for supply lines and PVC for drain and vent lines flux and solder (for cleaning and attaching copper pipes).
Flooring – A few of the best options include vinyl or ceramic tile. Be very careful with laminate, wood and carpets due to moisture.
Drywall – Make sure that the drywall is water-resistant. You will also need special drywall installation accessories such as screws, tape, joint compound and also light sanding supplies.
Paint or Wall Paper – Bathrooms usually tend to look nicer in cool neutral colors, but it’s basically up to you and your personal preference.
Plumbing Fixtures – New bathroom sinks and bathroom faucets, ventilation fans, shower and shower accessories, toilet, etc.–this is all based on the extent of your remodel.
Create a Budget for the Labor and Materials cost. It is recommended that you leave about 15% extra so you do not go over your budget.
Sometimes during any bathroom remodeling the unexpected happens, especially if it’s an older house or apartment. You may sometimes have to replace more items then you originally intended. It is however better to do it during the remodel rather than sometime down the road.
Based on Your Level of Experience, You May Be Able to Do Some of the Things Yourself. Some of the things you will not be able to do yourself and will require the assistance of an expert from a safety and house building code standpoint.
